While compression is normally an insert effect, you can also use it
as an auxiliary effect for parallel compression. This does not
cause phase problems as with analogue effects there is no
noticeable latency, and with a DAW it should be latency compensated.

YEp, but we're talking, iirc live sound reinforcement here,
at least if I"m understanding the op right.

Using one compressor on a bus with group of backup vox can work
well too. It sounds different from individually compressing each
track, as louder tracks duck quieter ones. This doesn't sound that
unnatural for some reason, at least for pop/rock music.

YEs, and for live sr this can work well. I think the
console he references has inserts on the buses, but might be
wrong about that, been awhile grin.
