Default Nakamichi DVD S10 - to fix or not

I have a Nakamichi DVD S10 that I had for about 3-4 years. Recently,
after a move across the continent, it stopped playing some DVDs, CDs
and VCDs. Advice from a local service center is to just buy another
unit, considering the cost of the parts. However, I kept an eye on
ebay for a while but I have yet to find a DVD S10.

I like the quality of the Nakamichi, especially the audio, but
considering that there are newer formats or systems like Blue Ray,
what would be the best thing to do? Fix it or buy a new unit of a
different brand?

I would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks ..

It's too easy to get cheap okay dvd players new. You could try some
home remedies such as cleaning the laser lens before pulling the plug
for the last time.

Is there a reason why you can't go to a dealer with a representative
selection of discs, plus your headphones and have an audition of whats
on offer these days?

I have tried cleaning the laser at home, but the improvement was
marginal. You are exactly on the dot; I think I want to avoid getting
into just okay DVD players, which I think I have seen one too many.

Yes, there are dealers in town that have auditioning chambers, for
lack of a better term, but none of them carry Nakamichis - well not
their fault, but only because Nakamichis are out of production. I
think at a corner of my mind, there might also be a bit of a
resistance to give up having a full set Nakamichis - I have Nakamichis
for receiver, tape player and DVD players. Plus, while these units
were a defensive strike before their last breath, in my personal
opinion, Nakamichi did a highly admirable job.

I have an eye on an Onkyo DVD player at the moment. What do you think
of the Onkyos?
