Default cd player reads error in 2002 Chevrolet Prizm

I have a cd player consolidated with an am-fm stereo factory installed.
The Cd player displays "error" and will not play the CD. The radio
works. The nearby dealership wants $800.00 to replace the unit (this
includes sending it to the manufacturer for possible repair with a
temporary "loaner CD-Radio" installed). I have not priced the unit.
Does anyone know about replacing this? Is it a simple plug-in to the
wiring harness or more complicated? Any info is appreciated.

for 800 bucks you could get yourself an indash dvd player :P
it is pretty simple to get a new aftermarket cd player/am/fm with lots
more funtions instead of going with another factory stereo. just take a
look at crutchfield.com and see if there are any stereos you might like
with some options like mp3 compatible or Ipod ready.. they basically
give you everything you need plus assistance in installation if needed.

did this just start happening out of the blue? was it on a burned cd
that you've never played before or does it do it on all cds?

If you really want to keep the factory you can get it fixed a lot cheaper
than 800.00. check with www.unitedradio.com
