Default ipod volume low playing through car stereo

I have just purchased an ipod nano 3g whilst in the US, when playing
through my car stereo (VDO cd radio)the volume is quite low.It is OK if
I turn the stereo volume control up, but when changing to the radio it
is very loud.
How can I solve this problem?
If the problem cannot be solved, will it damage the radio / speakers by
turning up the volume when playing the ipod.

Turn it down before you put it back on the radio?

Many (or at least some) head units allow you to program in a volume
offset for the various input sources - you have to get down into the
menus to do it, of course.
