U99 vs U87 For All Around Vocal Microphone

So, if you could only afford one.... And you were using them for vocals and some acoustic guitar work....what are the ups and downsides to both mikes? Thanks for any input. I have both. Depends on the voice. The U99 sounds really great on some singers and so-so on others. It is spectacular on acoustic guitar, mandolin, etc. The U87 is from the analog heydey and sounds pretty damn good on lots of things if you are recording to tape. My opinion is that it doesn't sound as good going to bits of data as it does to particles of magnetized oxide. I record mostly to analog and I like the 87 a lot. It's a sound I grew up listening to. The 87 is very forgiving and can sound pretty good on almost any singer. Pretty good for acoustic guitar, overheads, distant mic, etc. There's good reasons that it was a mainstay for a very long time. Now if you could afford a nice U67... -- -- John Noll Retromedia Sound Studios Red Bank, NJ 07701 Phone: 732-842-3853 Fax: 732-842-5631 http://www.retromedia.net |

I have been pleasantly surprised at the versatility of the RE-20. It is an amazing, useful mic. Like Scott said "I'd buy an RE-20 instead" Notice he didn't say "try one". Wayne |
