Hello again,

I appreciate the help offered in my last post. This time I'm
seeking guidance regarding the use of compressors. We have a dbx 266
which I had initially intended for vocals, but really need at least 2
more units for leveling. I'm now thinking that I'll use Groups 1 & 2
for lead (1) backup (2) vocals, then run those into the dbx's the
questions are where to bring the returns back into my DDA CS8 and then
what attack / release settings. I've ran manual gain control for so
long I'm not sure about the settings. In the past the groups I\ve
worked with have been so cash strapped that Its a challenge to work
with some nice equipment. As always ALL input is welcome, Thanks
again.

You don't want to use your compressor in an effect loop because it
will phase the hell out of your vocals. You need to use it in an
insert.

You don't want to use your compressor in an effect loop because it will
phase the hell out of your vocals. You need to use it in an insert.

While compression is normally an insert effect, you can also use it as an
auxiliary effect for parallel compression. This does not cause phase
problems as with analogue effects there is no noticeable latency, and
with a DAW it should be latency compensated.

Using one compressor on a bus with group of backup vox can work well too.
It sounds different from individually compressing each track, as louder
tracks duck quieter ones. This doesn't sound that unnatural for some
reason, at least for pop/rock music.

For vocals, try quite a long attack with a short release.

YEp, but we're talking, iirc live sound reinforcement here,
at least if I"m understanding the op right.

YEs, and for live sr this can work well. I think the
console he references has inserts on the buses, but might be
wrong about that, been awhile grin.
