How come it has to be a booth? Can't you just build a box or whatever of
good proportion, hang or mount it and let it seal off at the shoulders or
under the shoulder or at the waist?
Hope I'm being clear.

Is it dark in here, or is it just me? I'm feeling a bit
light-headed...

All the best fortune,

There is so much garbage out there that stops people from making music
these days. It doesn't have to be anything. If you want to record in
the bathroom and string the mic cable out to the garage where you have
made a control room and studio then do it, it might work..... Wait, it
did work. I played some keyboard tracks on a few Pattie Labelle for
James Gatson (who was producing them) and his studio which was in his
garage next to his pool and the Patties Vocals were tracks in the
bathroom behind the garage. (he tracked her going pee too which was
funnier then hell).

Point is that the best music comes out of feeling and talent, not
10,000 dollar mics and preamp with expensive rooms built around them.
It might help, but it doesn't make music.

And how come it has to be at all? I think a lot of people build a
vocalbootyh because they think they're meant to, not really working
out if it's got a useful function in their way of working.

There are a lot of answers, and the solution you need depends on what
problem you have. Here's my take on vocal booths:
