Default Lenny Kravitz vocal sound

If anyone is familiar with the early Kravitz stuff (Let Love Rule, Mama
Said) i'd like to find out what gear was in the chain to get that
sound. Its a thick warm sound that breaks into a pleasing (to my ear)
saturation or distortion on the loudest passages. I'm thinking Neve
pre pushed hard or maybe its a colored tube pre? Or just tape hit
hard?

Thoughts?
