Default subwoofer recommendations

I would like to purchase a subwoofer to complement my 1.6 Maggies. As
usual, space is an issue, so I am attracted to units like the Sunfire
Super Junior. Would you recommend that sub, or is there another small
sub that is better and/or more economical?

Thanks for your advice.

Small subs tend to need massive amounts of wattage, which tends to make them
more expensive, if that's not a concern, just choose whatever you like.

Bigger subs tend to go lower and will still need a fair amount of power, but
in a normal room 200-300 watts should be fine, although more can't hurt.

A consideration: Infinite Baffle subs can be hidden in an attic or basement
if you have one.

Best suggestion for small space and big bass:
1. SVS cyclinder type subwoofer
2. A DIY sonosub (same as above but DIY with the wofer of your choice).

With a cylinder you get a small footprint, the SVS units are all 16" IIRC.
You also get the advantage of a cylinder not having the same kind of bracing
requirements that a conventional box has, and all the volume is in the
height.
Because all the force is being applied fairly evenly around the cylinder no
cabinet noise.

The SVS line has been very favorably reviewed by bass freak Tom Nousaine.

You can of course build your own sub with a sonotube cylinder and a woofer
such as the Adire Shiva and the amp of your choice and save some money and
get the satisfaction of knowing you made it, but that's up to you.

The gold standard subwoofer for the Magnepan 1.6's is the Rel Strata III.
It is a sealed box as opposed to a ported design. It has a highly adaptable
crossover network and integrates beautifully with 1.6's. I have a pair (one
for each channel) but a single subwoofer also works well.

The only problem with the Strata III is availability. It was discontinued by
Rel this past year (why, I don't know) and there is strong demand for them
on the used market. I had to import my second unit from a private owner
in the UK. Keep your eyes open on Audiogon and eBay, they appear
occasionally.

I am using the little Von Schweikert with my Merlin TSM-MM's with excellent
results. It is barely bigger than the Sunfires and looks gorgeous too.

I have been using Velodyne's stunning DD-15 for the past year with
several speakers... I truly believe it represents a new aera of
subwoofer performance as well as usability and adjustability - it shows
you everything you need to know in real time on your tv screen, does a
20-200hz sweep and gives you an 8 band parametric eq, phase, polarity,
etc setting... perhaps the most adjustable subwoofer of all.

REL of course is a superb subwoofer as well, but I would deffinitley
check out the DD series from Velodyne!

Cheers,

Danny
