Default Jeep Wrangler system

Just got a 2005 Rubicon. It seems like it might be a pretty challenging
vehicle to put a great sounding stereo into, so I need your advice. I don't
have much left to spend on equipment so I'm gonna try to recycle as much of
my old gear as I can. Here's some of what I have:

- CDT Audio HD-62 6.5" 2-way components
- Amp for mids/highs: Helix HXA400 MKII (2x250W bridged into 4 ohms)
- Sub amp: MMATS D200HC (1x1200W @ 1 ohm)

I'd love to be able to put the 6.5" speakers in the doors (they're hard
doors), but the only location that looks doable would point the speakers
right at the seat bottoms. So I'm leaning towards putting them in the
overhead pods on the roll bar. I know this isn't ideal since they'd be
behind my head, but it seems like that would be better than having them
firing into the seats. I thought I might be able to compensate for this bad
location with one of these "UpStage" systems, which will supposedly improve
the imaging:

http://www.cdtaudio.com/stagefront_upstage_systems.htm

Or would I be better off putting the 6.5s in the doors and spending my money
on upgrading my 2-ways to 3-ways with new 4" mids and 3-way crossovers (I
think that's possible). The 4s would go in the factory dash locations.

Also, what would be a good sub to go with, assuming it'll go in the small
space behind the rear seat? I think I'll be limited to one or two 10s since
I'll want to be able to put the soft top down all the way. I'll need
something with good power handling but that doesn't need much airspace. I
was thinking maybe one or two Solobaric L7s -- any thoughts?

Thanks much,
Jason

I've done a lot of research on subs and the Infinity Perfect sub
drivers in a 10" or 12" would work well in a .80 or 1.0 cu. ft
enclosure. 1.0 is ideal according to Infinity. You can pick them up
on Ebay for around 100.00.

Cool, thanks for the tip. I figure that I have an enclosure volume budget
of about 1.5 ft^3. I could go a little bigger but it would make the box a
lot harder to build, and I'm lazy. If I went with two of the Perfect 10s
they wouldn't quite have enough space and the total power handling would be
700W -- not fully utilizing the 1200W I have available. With just one, I
don't think the amp would be "challenged" enough. ;-)

What's your opinion of the Solo-Baric L7's? I figure that I can squeeze two
of those back there, given their 0.66 ft^3 requirement. Or what about an
Image Dynamics IDMAX 10? It looks like I could go either way cheap enough
on eBay. Thanks again for your help.

I have a 1997 Wrangler with the same problem. I have a whole bunch of
speakers lying around, but the front area isn't the greatest for
installing speakers. I have found that kick panels sound pretty decnt
with some tweets up high, but i just can't quite get the sound as good
as I want it. If you feel like going a little nuts with the subs, I can
share my sub box design with you. I eliminated the back seat and built
my own w/2 down firing 15's. It will be good once I get the time to
finish it. Email me any time , and I will try to keep
you posted on my progress, maybe it will help. I am going to try to
work on it tomorrow. Mark

I decided to go with 5.25" components. I think I can fit the 5.25" in the
dash with the adapter plates I ordered from www.offroadtoystore.com. I'm a
little worried about the mounting depth though. I'm also going to use some
of those XTC baffles stuffed with polyfill to try to better isolate the
front and back of the speaker. As I'm sure you know, the 5.25s will now be
pointed at my knees and partially obscured by the dash, but it's just too
much of a PITA to put them somewhere better. I think it'll sound decent
enough with the tweeters up high.

Did you build custom kick panels? I couldn't find any for 6.5" drivers for
the Wrangler. Seems like they'd be pointed right at legs and feet anyway.

Thanks for the offer on the box design, but I need to keep my back seat --
that's where my dog goes. :-)

I am going to get them built soon. I am thinking some 5 1/4's and 6
1/2's in the kick panel area, w/ tweets on the dash, and who knows what
else from there.

I set the speakers in there on some towels to prop them up and aim them,
and they sounded pretty nice. The tweets on the dash got the
duct-tape/tape ring treatment to hold them in place. I actually
unbolted my driver seat, and moved it back 4" because I'm 6'6" tall, and
that should help reduce the obstruction.

My dog will sit on the sub box if she has to, but she either sits on the
passenger seat, or she puts her butt on the box (which is shapoed like a
back seat) and her front paws on the floor. It is kinda funny.

Hey, let me know how that turns out. I'd love to see pics if you can take
some.

Hahaha, dogs are great entertainment, aren't they? Last weekend I decided
to see if my Great Dane would fit in the back seat. He did okay getting in,
but it took us about an hour to get him back out. Talk about a boat anchor!
Looks like my black lab is going to be my Jeep dog.

I'm in Parker, CO (near Denver). Looking forward to lots of Lab & Jeep days
