Default Hixon cut

The New York Giants lost wide receiver Domenik Hixon to injury almost
exactly one month ago. It's now possible Hixon will never play for the
Giants again.

Pro Football Talk is reporting that the Giants waived Hixon on
Thursday afternoon, making him available to all NFL teams. The Giants
decided to waive Hixon's right rather than place the wide receiver on
injured reserve, which would have automatically ended Hixon's 2010 NFL
season. Concerning this season, the move doesn't matter one way or
another. Hixon will be forced to sit out all of this upcoming season
due to a torn right ACL.

The Giants signed special teams player Adam Jennings to replace Hixon
on the team roster.

While the move sounds rather cold, it's one that NFL teams perform all
the time during the summer months whenever a player is lost for the
season, especially when that player is not signed for the following
year. The way things currently stand, Hixon will become a free agent
at the end of the 2010 NFL season. If the Giants deem necessary, the
team can always reclaim Hixon and immediately put the wide
receiver/punt return specialist on IR as the two sides work out a deal
for the future.

If a team other than the Giants does acquire Hixon, that team will be
forced to pay Hixon's $1.6+ million salary. While only 25 years old,
Hixon has thus far shown to be a less talented, less versatile version
of Josh Cribbs, nothing more. There was no guarantee he was going to
be with the Giants in 2011 even before his season ending injury.
