Default Digital Speakers

Loudspeakers are pretty much the only analog part that remains
necesary in the playback chain (OK analog amps are still required
*because* of analog speakers). As mentioned elsewhere in another
recent posting, pretty much everything else is now capable of being
delivered by low-cost, commodity computer-based technology.

I wonder if we'll ever see practical, affordable digital speakers
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_speakers) or will the specialist
hi-fi speaker manufacturers remain necessary for high-end
non-headphone-delivered hi-fi for the forseeable future?

Doesn't the "Intractable problems" section of that article provide the
answer to that question?

Andrew.

Depends on just how intractible those problems remain in the future
for engineers
