Hi there !

I'm going to add another pre to the arsenal of mine. Great River seems
to be a good choice from what I heard so far.
I cannot get all of their pres home for testing, but only one. That's
why I would like to know what's the sound difference between MP-2NV,
MP-2 and MP-2MH to decide which one to take home.
Could someone please compare the sound to a Vipre which I already
have?

I can't compare it to a Vipre, but my MP2MH is wonderful.

I would say that it is extremely transparent and I prefer it for use on
acoustic work.

the MH has output transformers which the other model does not have. Yopu can
come out of the preamp using either transformer or transformerless.

The MH offers both and is my choice.

I have the idea that a MH or NV might be the one to go for. Everybody
is saying good things about them.
It's hard to find a dealer around europe/germay that hires the pres
for testing, so I'm looking for some testfiles to compare the two
ones.

I'll go out on the limb and say get the MP2-MH; it's just one hell of a
preamp in the transparent realm for pres that have transformers up
front. The NV is also a fabulous pre, but one of its strong points is
the degree of coloration one can inject. Reads to me like you feel you
have that covered.

I could be wrong, and it's not as if the NV can't also get pretty clean.
The coloration it offers varies through degrees of subtle, and at
certain gain ranges it approaches the MH for cleanliness. But the MH
delivers that cleanliness throughout its available gain range, and to my
ear, is a fabulous thing very often.

Hank makes a valid argument for MH. As you expand your mic collection, some
dynamics, most ribbons, you'll find more and more need for a neutral, clean,
high gain, pristine preamp ). IMHO, that would be the Great River MP2-MH.
Since you already have "color", vipre and 386, you may be best served now and
in the future with the MH.

I bought the NV model because of the "insert point" which makes it
easy to put a compressor into the chain. Works for the way I work,
which relies on plugins / Pro Tools vs. analog processing.

Modest, but functional.
