Default background vocal versus background music?

So this explains why a song I recorded that was used as incidental music in the
movie Spy Game looped the instrumental part of the song instead of playing the
vocals...(you can barely hear it anyway.)

I did one once for a movie made for the Playboy Channel. It ended up
appearing in a scene where it was playing on the car radio... but it
played for almost a minute, so the writer did get a small check. Talk
about barely hearing it.....
