I just bought a new 24 ch for 1378.00 so I am guessing a 16 would be
close to the "around 1000$" price the poster asked about

But well worth the price increase. I have not one whit of remorse for
having spent more for the Crest and I'm constantly finding different ways it
can be used, like running a separate stereo mix from aux 1/2 rather than
being stuck with a FOH mix. They've thought of a lot of things.

See how far $20 really goes.

For a little bit more, check out the 14:4:2 model. Most people think
of the 16 channel Mix-Wiz, but I like the 14:4:2 a lot better.

It has subgroups, and it also has a mode that you can turn the subs
and the masters all into groups, to set it up as a 6 output monitor
mixer.

Since about half the channels are stereo I think it also has a bit
more room between the knobs but I'm not sure about that.

p.s. Double the price and look at the Crest XR20, that's double (or
even more) the price though...

Anything Crest is a BIG step up from the A&H, Mackie, et al crowd. The only
potential drag I see is the need to keep a lot of space clear of the back panel
for interconnection. Not a problem in an installation but a bit of extra work
for location work. And it comes in several versions for more flexibility. A
local sound company I know chose the Crest for their corporate gigs where they
need a small yet very high quality mixer, & they could afford anything they
wanted (i.e. the Midas) but chose the Crest.

There is definitely a rift in this market, a nice console with good pres good
eq with 100 mil faders at a mid level price.

A real problem. I usually just go all digital and mix digital--even
the soundcard 42 bit mixer sounds better than cheap analog. There are
still some people like Rens Heijnis who will make you a real analog
mixer, but not for cheap.
For cheap and quiet, I agree with Scott--I have used a Rane SM62B with
eight ultra high quality mic pres and it is very quiet, inexpensive
and portable. But it is not state of the art by any means.
