Default Wanted: Good Sound in a Small Package

My wife and I have a really small house with a really small living
room. Right now we have an NAD 7240 receiver from the '80s and a
pretty generic 5-disc CD player. We haven't shopped for audio
equipment since the 80s, and don't have a clue what's on the market
these days.

Can anyone recommend replacement components that sound as good, but are
much smaller? It would be great if we could find something as small as
some of the Bang and Olufsen stuff, but we don't want to pay a premium
for styling instead of sound.

Bonus points for anyone who can recommend small speakers to go with
their other recommendation(s). Thanks in advance!

Regards,

John

Believe it or not, your NAD receiver is still serviceable and I'd
recommend keeping it. Speakers have come a very long way, and so have
CD players.

Get a pair of Infinity 150 speakers for under $125 per pair. Get a
Pioneer DV-383S player for under $100 -- it plays every format under the
sun and sounds good.

This setup is not terribly small but you'd be hard pressed to better its
sound quality for under $1500.

That's Infinity Primus 150 speakers.
