1. Bax Sym. 1 on Lyrita LP - Interesting music, GREAT sound.

2. Handel Dixit Dominus on EMI CD Recorded in '66 - Fantastic early
polyphonic Handel - Sound is above average, not great

3. Redline Tango; Univ of Kansas Wind Ensemble on very new Naxos CD -
neat music, including the new and highly interesting Flute Concerto by
Michael Mower - excellent sound, except the solo flute is very thin
sounding, as usual on CD.

Good shopping! I don't see many Lyritas around here.

Today's Half-Price results:

1. Brahms Piano Concertos 2 lp DG box. Replaces the gatefold version I
left in an airport fifteen or so years ago.

2. Bowie rarities on German RCA vinyl. Maybe the best way to hear
"Helden."

3. Weiss suites played by Hopkinson Smith on Astree cd. Dunno if he's
really the missing link between Scarlatti's Essercizi and Bach's
Goldberg Variations, but it's good for a pianist to hear baroque dances
on lute. Anyone remember a one-hit wonder called Steel Breeze? This is
the real stile brise.

Bax is interesting but irritating in that he comes up with great
themes and goes nowhere with them. Also he lacks rhythmic propulsion;
Bax music is all stop-start. Pleasant to listen to occasionally, but
I'll stick with Vaughan Williams.
