Default AMD vs. Intel...

Hi

I'm building a new PC for music production using Logic Audio, Cubase, etc.
and I'm interested in hearing opinions from anyone who has compared Intel
and AMD systems on these softwares...

I'll be using Audiowerx soundcards as well.

Thanks

It makes less difference now than it ever did in the past.
Practically anything works these days.
Even video, which is more demanding, works on either brand of platform.

AMD vs Intel is a non issue. However, I recommend you avoid motherboards
with the VIA chipset. I've had problems with sporadic missampling.

True today but there is a divergence in the works with Intel.
They are abandoning the practice of associating chip
names with computer speed. In addition, the millions
spent in pursuit of the 4 GHz chip has fallen by the wayside
in favor of more memory cache and a dual-core possessor.
Overall, Inter is now more interested in home electronics
and wireless junk. In this light AMD may become the
dominant speed king and almost certainly first at the
4 GHz mile marker.

I've heard this, but ironically, my main editing system uses the Via P4X266
chipset.
Haven't had a problem.
With what chipset did you have the problem?

Only major issue will be sound... AMD computers tend to be noiser because
AMD chips run at higher temperatures. Intel computers are quieter.

However... if you choose your parts carefully and purchase good quality
fans, this shouldn't be much of an issue.

This is not true anymore. The new P4's run extremely hot, while the
newer AMD 64's run quite a bit cooler. Especially the newer P4E chips.

For some things, they already *are* the speed king.

Further, they were the first to abandon MHz as a marketing term (back in
the K6 days, if memory serves); they re-adopted it, and have since
dropped it again (check a modern AthlonXP: look for the appellation
"MHz" anywhere near its rating).

MHz *isn't* a measure of performance relative to any other core; you can
rest assured that the same core clocked higher will do better if it can
handle it, but a different core can't be so compared. Simple example:
P-II vs. P-III. More interesting example: Pentium vs. Pentium Pro.

The latter is pretty informative regarding the relativity of
performance: Windows95 on a Pentium out-performed Win95 on a PPro; for
NT or Linux or OS/2, it was just the opposite.

Crossing manufacturing boundaries, try comparing a DEC/Compaq/HP 21264
Alpha chip against anything else MHz for MHz; the Alpha wins.

For an audio machine, it doesn't matter- get something in the 2GHz range
and don't bother with it any more. Get the chip that matches the
motherboard and RAM you want; even your curtains.

I second this. I personally like Intel chipsets and ASUS motherboards,
though, which leads to a slight Intel CPU bias - though only because
of the first two factors.

A cheap MB is like a rebuilt motor in a car. Pray it doesn't blow
up on you.

Via and ATI video cards don't play along well.

I am not a specialist but I am afraid that nobody answer correctly to PG
request.
I remember that in the past both Intel and AMD processors have
*specific* set of embedded multimedia microcode.

I would tend to say that PG question is related to this *specific*
multimedia instructions and concerns his software and hardware
optimisation in regard of these specific set of multimedia instructions.

Here we reach my knowledge limits. ;-)

It's all good. The competition between AMD and Intel has led to a situation
where Intel can no longer charge monster premium prices for high performance
CPU chips.

I'll be using Audiowerx soundcards as well.

Are sure that that brand of audio interfaces is spelled Audiowerx? Even
google doesn't seem to turn up much about them.

I don't remember. I tossed that motherboard out a couple of years ago.
I'm running a Pentium 4 and an Intel chipset now. It's at home, I'm at
work, so I can't be more specific.

He probably means Audiowerk.

Agreed. My Cambridge speakers vanish with AMD processors but squawk

Thanks to all of you who responded - think I'm gonna go for a
dual-processing AMD Opteron solution...

Any motherboards to avoid with this processor?

Oh and yes, it is 'Audiowerk' sound cards
