Default Post-recording help needed

Hi folks

I've recorded a service our choir did in a cathedral, unfortunately the
recorded volume is very very low. If I normalize the waveform to 100%, I
get a reasonable quality sound but with a little too much hiss and a
background hum. I've tried experimenting with CoolEditPro but I'm no
expert. So, I now have 2 questions:

a)
I've placed a short sample of the recording (with some pure hiss without
music at the end) on my FTP site at
ftp://rowyerboat.homedns.org/hereford/hereford.mp3 (anonymous). It's in MP3
format and only 1Mb in size. Using CoolEditPro, is anyone able to get a
clean sound out of it, and can you tell me how you do it please (ie. what
settings?).

b)
I've put a diagram of where things were when the recording was done and the
direction things were facing. Although we had no choice in the positioning
of the microphones, is anyone able to comment upon how bad this positioning
is, and/or what I should try and aim for? (see
ftp://rowyerboat.homedns.org/hereford/hereford.jpg) - (anonymous)

Many thanks in advance for your help,
Steve
