open reel-to-reel deck prob
Having problem with feed reel apparently binding about 75% of the way
through a recording or playing. About 75% of the way machine stops. Take up reel seems unable to turn beyond this point. Just tinkering with it shows take up reel is not binding but feed reel is very stiff or tight to turn manually. When feed reel is almost full and takeup reel almost empty there is no problem. This is an open reel, reel-to-reel tape deck. |

Most common problem is that the pinch roller is slipping, and when the supply reel diameter gets small, the pinch roller can't pull the tape. Or - check hold back tension check than the brake isn't sticking check that the shaft or motor holding the supply reel hasn't seized up check the capstan the capstan pulls the tape at a constant speed the supply reel usually pulls against the tape with about 3 oz of tension for 1/4 inch tape the take up reel pulls in the direction of the tape also with about 3oz of tension bg the takeup reel |

When the tape stalls is the pinch roller skidding on the tape between
the roller and the capstan... the capstan is still turning ?? Do not hit stop button unwind some of the feed reel by hand does the feed real turn freely or binding .. if it doesnt turn freely your problem is most likely lubrication of the spindle bearings. If the feed reel turns freely and there is tape slack that is not being pulled through the pinch roller/capstan you have one of 2 problems. Problem 1) some older tape especially bargain brands were slightly wide and will hang up in the tape guides or pro or semi pro machines. No solution for that. Problem 2) Sticky tape syndrome mostly associated with Ampex tape. The binder has absorbed moisture and acts like sticky flypaper going through the tape path and sticks to the guides and stalls. One of the solutions to this is known as tape baking in an over for several hours at 110 120 degrees to bake the moisture out ... not for amateurs to try with out some detailed instructions. Get back to me what you find is your problem dnw In article , Frank wrote: Having problem with feed reel apparently binding about 75% of the way through a recording or playing. Suggest posting in rec.audio.pro whey're they are very expert about this. Graham |

Get back to me what you find is your problem Never found the cause of problem. I went through and tested what I could of all of your suggestions and the suggestions of the other posts and all that I could determine was in order. However, the process of doing that apparently did something and the machine is working ok now. Thank you all for your suggestions. Frank |

Sounds like sticky shed. If this problem happens with some tapes but
not with others, that could be the culprit. Here's one way to deal with it: http://www.tangible-technology.com/tape/baking1.html Frank wrote: : Having problem with feed reel apparently binding about 75% of the way : through a recording or playing.
