I think I have to change out the RCA plugs but I have no idea how to get to
the inside where they're connected. One channel just drops right out and
doesn't come back until I remove the plug and re-seat it. When I remove the
plug I get major noise, not just the channel going silent.

I have User and Service manuals, but neither of them address how to get to
the insides where the cable is connected.

To remove the 604 from the base, loosen the 3 transit screws on the top
so that they are loose (can slide up and down a bit) and lift the
turntable by the edge and ease it off the base. BE VERY CAREFUL as the
exposed bottom has many fragile parts. Be careful how you set it down
as well. Also, the cables may be clamped to the lower base.

However, as I recall, the phono leads are either soldered or are slide
lugs in these turntables, so that you are best off soldering new RCA
plugs on to the existing cables. Check though, as my memory might be a
bit foggy on this.

Don't forget that the headshell and its connections can be troublesome
on these as well. I'd suggest cleaning the tonearm side of the contacts
with a q-tip and alcohol. Don't use an abrasive, as it will remove the
plating from the contacts. The crimps at both the cartridge and
headshell spring contact end of the headshell wires can be suspect,
though the RCA plugs are almost always bad.

Thanks! I have tried pulling it up but there's resistance so I backed off.
Maybe the transit screws are still catching - they were undone so I could
use the TT. I think I'll go with new plug ends and save me messing up
something, since I have to be soldering either way.

While there is nothing wrong with just changing the plugs, maybe I was
not clear. While the transit screws are in the 'loose' position, lift
them and tilt them towards the outer edge of the turntable. This should
allow the large washer at the bottom to clear the cut out on the base.
You might have to move the screw up or down a bit in its free position
to do this.

Again, nothing wrong with just changing the plugs.
