I am considering purchasing a dynaco PAS 3 pre amp. Does any one have any
experience/opinions regarding these pre amps? |

I think they sound terrible unmodified. Just my opinion. Jon I agree; I owned one ca 1963 made from a kit. One trick I found was that the tone controls were not actually set for flat when centered, and I spent some time finding out what was flat, and marked the positions. I also had an Eico ST-70, which wasn't any better in terms of tone control accuracy. My favorite preamp at that time was the Marantz 7; the Citation I was too noisy, in my opinion. The Eico HF85's are a much better preamp.
They usually need somenew input jacks as the grounding is bad, but when fixed up they are an excellent sounding preamp. They have a wonderful phono stage also. dan "alison" wrote in message ... I agree with every one that the PAS 3 is a poor re-amp I owned both a Fisher 400c and A heathkit SP-2a( dual mono w/ seperate power supply) and a PAS3( veiled, muddy sound) I liked the openness of the Heath kit as a line stage and the Fisher as a phono pre- Replaced them both for a audio research sp9 For $500.00 to $600.00 it is night and day from the older units. If in doubt clone a Marantz 7. The only thing better is a phono stage
using passive RIAA rather than the feedback design, and to work well they need to be built hell for stout-Tektronix/Collins standards. Read the 1981 TAA article ,St.Pooge and the DRIAAgon, by Jung and Marsh (I think). Build the power supply outboard or in a fully shielded separate space. I would use a modern regulator and pass transistor for regulated heaters. The only big improvement not dealt with adequately in this article is the use of a precision stepped attenuator, manually or stepper motor activated (a remote control Marantz 7? Sure!). The other thing is-the best line stage is no line stage. Electronic powered devices-DAC's, CD players, and (unless youu are using a Millen AM crystal set) tuners should drive power amps directly, in principle, as i see it. The stock PAS is not a good unit at all. Of course, is ANY stock Dyna tube unit any good by modern standards? |

OCSL/AudioXPress offers it as part of "The Pooge Chronicles". Amazon
says it's out of print but they are wrong: OCSL has several in stock (I emailed them.) They also have the TAA back issues on CD in .pdf form. If you are in the US you may get a copy of the 1981 article through interlibrary loan at any library. |
