I've tried several cables, 3 macs and 2 PC's...is there something else I'm missing with these units on making them work?

Have you tried another Firewire cable? Could be that, while the leads
that provide power are OK, but there's a break in one of the data wires
or a bad connection at the connector. Both the Mac and PC (from at
Windows XP on, though I don't know about Windows 10) have Firewire
drivers so unless there's something odd about the Fireport, there should
be no need for a special driver. But with an obsolete product, one never
knows.
