*twice*. I'm not sure I follow your reasoning, because you seem to
regard self-sufficiency as a bad thing, and I see it as an ideal.

Take a trip to Haiti some time. Lots of huge estates, but no roads
between them. Self-sufficiency is a good thing, but somebody has to
maintain the commons.
