I had one collector record old songs from

I noticed that right channel was mirror
image of left channel (upside down).
In other words, when I look at the wave
in wave editor, peak above axis in left
channel would appear as peak below axis
in right channel. What would cause that.
Some previous recordings from him
did not exihit this behavior.

Did he actually use a mono cartridge? Or perhaps he used a 78 stylus
in a stereo cartridge, and he has wired the channels out of phase.

That's surely the case if he just got a new cartridge or headshell.

Alternatively, would you get that effect if the record was recorded "hill
and dale" rather than "side to side" and then subsequently played with a
stereo cartridge? (Is it French, by any chance?) In any case, obviously
you should invert one channel before combining them.
